Juan de Balmaseda, the Jesus Crowned with Thorns Panel of Oviedo Cathedral's Main Retable

1516-18
Detail from the main retable, Oviedo Cathedral

This relief is a detailed rendition of Matthew 27:28-30 – "And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him. And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews. And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head." Note the scarlet cloak on Jesus and the bench serving as his mock throne. He has been given the crown of thorns and at the moment shown one servant is prssenting the reed while two others are about to strike his head.

Although in Matthew it is Pilate's soldiers who do these things, the artist has dressed them as civilians and has placed behind Jesus what appears to be a Jewish official.
